Director, Vaccine Research Center
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

In 1999, armed with expertise in virology, immunology, gene therapy, and molecular biology, Dr. Nabel became director of the Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center, which is dedicated to the development of effective vaccines for human diseases. The center was established at the National Institutes of Health by former President Bill Clinton with an initial focus on developing an HIV vaccine. Dr. Nabel, who is well known for his research with HIV, cancer, and Ebola virus, has studied how cells coordinately regulate the expression of genes during viral infection and development. He came to NIH from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he was the Henry Sewall Professor of Internal Medicine, professor of biological chemistry, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. Dr. Nabel is an associate editor of the Journal of Virology and a member of the Institute of Medicine.
